James Doty, MD, is a professor in the Department of Neurosurgery and the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford School of Medicine. He has collaborated on many research projects focused on compassion and altruism.

Dr. Doty writes for the Huffington Post and is the author of Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart. He is on the board of directors of several nonprofit foundations, including the Dalai Lama Foundation and the Charter for Compassion International. Dr. Doty also serves on the international advisory board of the Council for the Parliament of the World’s Religions.
