Viveka-chudamani, significantly called “The Crest Jewel of Discerning Wisdom” gives the quintessence of spiritual knowledge and explores the tenets of Advaita Vedanta in a lucid and poetic dialogue between Guru and disciple. It is one of Adi Shakaracharya’s introductory treatises, usually studied and memorized by students before they take up the more important works like the commentaries on the Prasthanatraya in orthodox Vedanta tradition. This lively discourse deals with topics such as the value of human birth, important practices of discipline, and the fundamental questions of life such as bondage, liberation and the Atman, and the possibility of higher evolution at a spiritual level.
