About the Ashram
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat is located across the bay from Nassau, Bahamas, on one of the finest beaches in the world. It is truly an island paradise and a sanctuary of peace and natural beauty. With its pristine white sand beach, crystal blue waters and five and a half acres of lush tropical gardens, the Yoga Retreat provides the ideal environment for practice, rest and rejuvenation. With its celebrated lineage of Yogic Masters, the Yoga Retreat offers a rare combination of a traditional ashram with the feel of a Caribbean resort.
Guests are welcome to take a “Yoga Vacation”, enjoying a program rich with lectures by world renowned speakers, Yoga classes, delicious vegetarian meals, snorkeling, and plenty of time to relax. Visitors to the Retreat can choose from a variety of lodging options to suit their personal needs while enjoying all the learning opportunities available at the ashram. Choices include luxurious beach front suites overlooking the ocean, to your own tent pitched in our lovely coconut grove. Our nutritious vegetarian meals keep the body going and are prepared with loving care, using fresh vegetables, fruits, and grains according to Yogic dietary principles.
Single guests, couples and families with children are all welcome at the Yoga Retreat. We offer several special programs for families and children throughout the year and special Yoga classes & other fun activities for children are held at the Retreat.
Yoga classes are offered twice daily for both beginner and intermediate levels (from June – December one ‘All Levels’ class is offered twice a day). Classes are taught by highly competent and experienced Yoga teachers on spacious outdoor platforms facing the soothing turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean or overlooking our beautiful tropical gardens.
A variety of courses on a diverse array of subjects are presented for all levels of practitioners. Our popular Yoga Teachers’ Training Course (RYT-200) is offered throughout the year and an Advanced Yoga Teachers’ Course (RYT-500) happens once a year. The Teachers’ Training Courses are carefully structured to create a profound personal experience; a firm foundation of inner discipline is built while students learn how to instruct others in the practice of Yoga. The Yoga Retreat offers a multitude of other courses on topics related to Yoga and healing, ensuring that practitioners always have a new way to expand and enhance their practice.
About the Practice
Yoga is a practice that is designed to promote health, happiness and peace of mind. Through a series of breathing techniques and physical exercises, you will become more flexible, energized and blissful. The Sivananda Yoga style emphasizes proper breathing, and includes practices for developing a steady, deep breath, which is rejuvenating and balancing. It further emphasizes proper relaxation, and allows time between the asanas for the benefits of each practice to fully assimilate, maintaining the body in a relaxed, meditative state. These physical exercises benefit the whole body, both on the muscular level and at the level of the inner organs. For example, the benefits of the sitting forward bend include developing a healthier and more flexible lower back, burning abdominal fat and promoting better digestion. The shoulderstand stimulates the thyroid glance while strengthening and toning the shoulders and thighs.
Everyone can practice Sivananda Yoga — whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner, Yoga will meet you where you are. Through a steady practice, under the guidance of our teachers, your practice will progress, and more and more postures will be achieved as the breath becomes steadier and the body becomes more flexible.
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat is an ideal setting to start, preserve or advance your Yoga practice. In honor of the Yoga tradition, the Yoga Retreat offers a serene environment, a simple yet comfortable facility and top-notch teachers who will patiently and compassionately guide you through the practice. In the words of our guru, Swami Vishnudevananda, “Health is wealth, peace of mind is happiness, Yoga shows the way”, the Yoga Retreat is dedicated to showing you the way to perfect health, happiness and peace of mind.
