Panchadashi is a highly regarded text in Vedanta composed by the erudite sage, Swami Vidyaranya in the 15th C. The tenth chapter has an intriguing analogy of an amphitheater. There is a dancer, a live orchestra, and, of course, the audience. In enjoying the dancer’s exquisite movements set to the harmonious melodies of the orchestra, one thing gains scant attention —the theater lamp, in the form of a large firebrand on top of a column in the middle of the theater. The single and constantly burning lamp lights up the presence and the absence of the dancer, the musicians, and the audience.
What might this lamp have to teach us about the self, the ātman, which is nitya, eternal, and in whose presence everything, as it were, comes to light?
Come and find out. You have nothing to lose, except self-ignorance.
