In the Zen tradition, the ox is a symbol of the mind and the herder symbolizes the spiritual seeker. It has roots in many early spiritual texts, including a Zen Buddhist teaching from the 12th century, The Ten Oxherding Pictures, a series of short poems and accompanying pictures. In this series, Father William Meninger will share with us a Christian interpretation of the ancient Zen koans and imagery that depict a seeker of truth’s journey toward enlightenment.
