The Divine Mother and the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) was an Indian freedom fighter, philosopher and yogi who, with his spiritual partner Mirra Alfassa (aka The Mother) (1878-1973) practiced and taught a form of yoga known as the Integral Yoga. This retreat will introduce the lives of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and their teachings of the integral yoga. It will also introduce their vision of a future life on earth based on the transformation of consciousness through the practice of yoga. Workshops will include introductions to Sri Aurobindo’s synthesis of Indian traditions of yoga in his seven quartets of becoming and the Mother’s four austerities and four liberations.

Debashish Banerjee is Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of South Asian Philosophy and
Culture and Doshi Professor of Asian Art at the California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco. The author of two books, The Alternate Nation of Abanindranath Tagore and Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformational Yoga Psychology Based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo, from 1992-2006, Debashish served as president of the East-West Cultural Center in Los Angeles, an institution dedicated to the dissemination of Indian spiritual culture and the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo in the US.
