How Kabbalah Reimagines God

Daniel Matt

The Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah invites us to encounter God in fresh and transformative ways. The kabbalists introduced a new name for the Divine: אין סוף (Ein Sof), the Infinite, the Endless. God, they taught, is beyond all conception and description—so vast that even the sacred names of Scripture cannot contain the mystery.

Paradoxically, God is called Nothingness—or more precisely, No-thingness. The Divine is not an object among other objects but the boundless energy that animates all life. This vision connects to the mystical experience of dissolving the ego and melting into divine no-thingness.

Kabbalah also expands our image of God beyond the patriarchal. The Divine is equally female and male, and ultimately beyond gender. The feminine presence of God, known as Shekhinah, dwells in the world as the radiant Divine Presence.

Another core teaching is that sparks of divinity are hidden in all things and in every person. Our spiritual work is “to raise the sparks”—to awaken to the sacred potential within nature, in our daily activities, and in each human encounter.

In this program you will:

  • Explore ancient Kabbalistic texts (in translation by Daniel Matt)
  • Discover profound new ways of imagining God
  • See how a particular mystical tradition offers universal insights for spiritual life today

Through study, reflection, and dialogue, we’ll engage with Kabbalah as a living wisdom tradition that continues to inspire seekers of all backgrounds to reimagine the Divine and rediscover the sacred within and all around us.

Offered as 2 satsangs and 2 workshops (subject to change).

The presentations associated with this Yoga Vacation Program begin with an 8pm satsang on the first day of the program and conclude with a 90-minute afternoon workshop on the last day of the program.  Click here to read more about the Yoga Vacation Program details and view the ashram schedule for yoga classes and meals during your stay. We suggest you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your program for the optimal experience.
