Gratitude: Where Neuroscience Meets Inner Awareness

Dr. Abha Rajbhandari

Thanksgiving invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect—with ourselves, with one another, and with life itself. Gratitude is more than a seasonal sentiment; modern neuroscience reveals it as a powerful biological force that supports emotional balance, strengthens well-being, and deepens healthy relationships.

Yogic philosophy calls this inner state santosha—contentment that arises when we rest fully in the present moment. From this grounded inner steadiness, gratitude naturally emerges, not as something we force, but as something we remember. It becomes a living experience of inner abundance rather than an external pursuit.

This immersive program weaves together scientific insight and ancient yogic wisdom to explore gratitude as both a physiological process and a spiritual practice. Through guided inquiry, reflection, meditation, and shared experience, you will discover how gratitude reshapes the nervous system, softens the heart, and opens the door to deeper connection.

Community (sāngha) is central to this journey. Practicing together creates a supportive field where we feel seen, held, and inspired. In this shared space, gratitude flows naturally—within and outward—nourishing compassion, generosity, and joy.

In this program, you will gain:

  • A clear scientific understanding of how gratitude affects the brain and emotions
  • Gratitude as a lived spiritual experience of inner fullness
  • Simple, sustainable daily practices to cultivate gratitude year-round
  • A deeper sense of connection with self, community, and the divine

What makes this program unique:

This is a rare integration of neuroscience and yogic philosophy, offering practical tools to embody gratitude as a daily way of living—not just a holiday feeling.

Come celebrate Thanksgiving as a sacred pause—an opportunity to reconnect, restore, and rediscover the abundance already within you.

Offered as 3 satsangs and 2 workshops (subject to change).

The presentations associated with this Yoga Vacation Program begin with an 8pm satsang on the first day of the program and conclude with an 8pm satsang on the last day of the program.  Click here to read more about the Yoga Vacation Program details and view the ashram schedule for yoga classes and meals during your stay. Abha is a neuroscientist fascinated by the intricate dance between the brain, vagus nerve, and body—especially in the realms of fear, stress, and anxiety. Her research dives into how our biological systems shape our emotional lives, and how understanding these patterns can lead to greater resilience and healing.

But Abha’s inquiry doesn’t stop in the lab. A lifelong spiritual seeker and holistic health enthusiast, she views the mind and body as inseparable—and believes true well-being comes from honoring both. For her, yoga is a way of life, not just a practice on the mat.

Born in Nepal and now based in the United States, Abha blends the ancient wisdom of her roots with modern scientific insight. She’s driven by a passion to bridge science and spirituality, and to explore life’s deepest questions through a unique lens of logic, mysticism, and embodied experience.
